Your garage door won’t open and you have no idea why. Before you panic, here are the 7 most common reasons a garage door won’t open — and what to do about each one.
1. Broken Torsion or Extension Spring
Most likely cause — if you heard a loud bang from the garage, this is probably it. Springs counterbalance the weight of the door. When one breaks, the door becomes too heavy for the opener to lift.
What to do: Do NOT try to force the door open. Call a professional. Spring replacement is dangerous and should never be DIY’d.

2. Dead Opener — Power or Motor Issue
If you press the button and nothing happens — no sound, no movement — the opener may have lost power or the motor may have failed.
Check:
- Is the opener plugged in?
- Did a circuit breaker trip?
- Is there power in the garage?
- Does the wall button work but not the remote?
If the unit has power but won’t run, the motor or logic board may have failed. See our opener repair service.
3. Misaligned or Blocked Safety Sensors
Modern garage doors have photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side of the door. If they’re misaligned, dirty, or blocked, the door won’t close (or sometimes won’t open).
Signs: Opener light blinks, door reverses immediately, one sensor LED is off or orange instead of green.
Fix: Wipe the lenses, ensure nothing is blocking the beam, and realign both sensors so they face each other directly. Learn more about our sensor repair service.
4. Dead Remote or Keypad Battery
The simplest fix — replace the batteries in your remote or keypad. If the wall button works but the remote doesn’t, this is almost certainly the cause.
Fix: Replace with fresh AA or AAA batteries. If it still doesn’t work, the remote may need to be reprogrammed. See our remote programming service.
5. Snapped Cable
Cables work with springs to lift and lower the door evenly. A snapped cable will cause the door to drop on one side, jam, or refuse to move.
Signs: Door tilts to one side, hangs crookedly, or you can see a loose cable hanging.
What to do: Don’t use the door. Call for emergency cable repair.
6. Door is Off Its Tracks
If the door came off its tracks (often from a vehicle impact or worn rollers), it won’t move properly and may be jammed at an angle.
What to do: Do not force it. An off-track door can fall. Call for off-track door repair immediately.
7. Opener Disconnect / Manual Lock Engaged
If someone pulled the red emergency release cord, the door is disconnected from the opener. It will only open manually until reconnected.
Also check if the door’s manual lock (the handle/lock bar) has been accidentally engaged — this physically prevents the door from moving.
Fix: Reconnect the trolley to the opener carriage, or disengage the manual lock.
